The Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Phil Yaitanes by Julie Harding (SCC Awards Committee Chair). Julie also presented the plaques, adding some of her own words:
Phil Yaitanes of Yaitanes Landscaping is a fixture around town. You see his crews daily, working diligently at their respective sites; but there is so much to Phil. There is the father who walks his kids frequently to the library and there is a man who recognizes the need to lend a hand for a community project. A history lesson: the Bradley Lessa Memorial Playground is located off West Street. It is a magnificent playground nestled adjacent to the trails at the town-owned conservation land known as the Libby property. The playground structure was a gift to the Town in 2006 from the Lessa family in memory of their young son. Phil took part in supplying and building the fencing that extends all the way from the West St to the park as well as providing landscaping work. Phil has also spent countless hours cleaning, landscaping and restoring many of our Veteran's Monuments to their original luster, without asking for a dime. In fact, he took this task on because he feels it is his way of giving back to those who gave so much of themselves, some even the ultimate sacrifice, to protect our way of life in these United States. I am pleased that my landscaper, and of many others, be recognized as the 2008 recipient Stoughton Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of the Year Award

Anne Havlin also received the 2008 Volunteer of the Year Award for all that she has done and continues to do as the Director of the Saint Anthony's Free Market. The Free Market is a pantry that provides food, clothing and other needed supplies to those less fortunate:
Anne Havlin has been a part of the Immaculate Conception Church community for many years as well as Stoughton Life Teen and Director of St. Anthony's Free Market Food Pantry. She has also been quite active with the Doin' it for Diane events. From giving back to our town's youth to helping families who are in need of food assistance, Anne is always there to extend a helping and kind hand. Anne Havlin is a true community leader and model for us all; and an ideal recipient of the 2008 Stoughton Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of the Year Award

Receiving the 2008 Business Person of the Year Award is Steve Robbins, owner of Maxie's Delicatessen. Accepting the award along with Steve is his good friend, Northeastern University Professor Jack Levin, a famous criminologist!
Steve Robbins is the owner of Maxie's Delicatessen in Stoughton and has been a member of the Stoughton Chamber for several years. Steve is an avid supporter of the business community as well as the entire community, through his involvement as a Board Member of the NE Sinai Men's Associates. Whenever we have approached Steve for a donation of food or a gift card, he has been very generous. When we put on the Caribbean BBQ, Steve provided us briskets and a carving station. He has given to the food panties, Youth Commission's Strengthening Families Program and several other organizations throughout the years. Steve Robbins is very much deserving of our 2008 Stoughton Chamber of Commerce Business Person of the Year Award. |

| Panera Bread in Stoughton, a location for so many sub-committee meetings for the Chamber as well as a local gathering place for many people to meet friends for breakfast and or lunch. Its warm atmosphere and friendly staff always make you feel welcome. For me personally - My god-child sees me and he goes looking for his Panera bagel even if it is 7pm at night; Auntie always has bagels from Panera. Many times I meet him with his Mom at Panera and he makes a voice-stress announcement Auntie Julie is here. Upon Panera's arrival to Stoughton they immediately embraced the business community and the town's host of needs. From donating to the Chamber events at the schools to Habitat for Humanity to taking part in the Preferred Customer Card to providing food assistance to families relocating to our area due to Hurricane Katrina - Panera is always there and graciously willing to assist the Stoughton Community. I am honored and thrilled one of my favorite eateries, a place of so many fond memories with god-child to a business establishment who believes in giving back - Panera Bread is the 2008 Stoughton Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year. | |
